Inventive design requires a reinterpretation of boundaries and a respectful disregard for the limits of tradition. Welcome to Mark Suess’ world, where East meets West and practicality gets passionate as he composes design solutions that defy categorization. Mark creates across genres, eras and oceans to surround his clients with boldly original, highly personalized designs rich in style and comfort.
“I take multiple cultures and multiple periods and I blend them into one person’s personality,” Mark says. “Today, with our connection to the world, nobody is monogamous to a culture anymore. We’re all a blend.” Mark’s inventive approach mingles traditional Asian aesthetic with simple American Craftsmanship, contemporary innovation with historical integrity, architectural artifacts with 21st century technology.
He finds inspiration near and far, integrating local resources into his designs and traveling the world in search of one-of-a-kind items. If the pieces he envisions aren’t available, he draws up designs and has artisans make them, giving each project its own distinctive character. Mark applies his global vision with an intensely individual focus as he redefines interior and exterior space.
“When people come to me, they might not know exactly how they want a room to look, but they know how they want it to feel and they know how they want it to function,” Mark explains. “I learn what they appreciate, what they’re able to handle. I learn my clients’ comfort zone and also their practical needs. There are more than 10 wonderful ways to do things, and I have to see what’s comfortable for them.”
He invites a synthesis between the environments outside and in, applying touches of the natural landscape in the interior and bringing a luxury normally reserved for indoor living into the laid-back outdoor lifestyle. Mark works best when he’s designing on both sides of the threshold, creating a style that carries from the front door to the intimate spaces within. “The outside architecture should always give you a feeling of what’s inside. You should never have to guess. You should at least know the feeling.”
